editorial

"Heya Girls!"
I would like to swear like a sailor right now! Because this is the third editorial that I’ve written in two days – the event cancelling has started again across the board, one event after the other dies the silent death of Corona. I'm just glad that we women are good at one thing: being flexible. When the human world is torn apart by a hungry virus, I just jump into a world that couldn’t care less about the virus – to my buddies, the birds. In the overgrown editorial office garden, titmice, blackbirds and sparrows are bustling about. And the bird bath in front of my office window is the Gänsehäufl of the Viennese feathered friends. (Even now, they are still diligently bathing!) Incidentally, the first sparrow count to ever take place in Vienna is currently going on – and this will definitely not be cancelled. The super-sociable bird squads use dense bushes or climbing plants as daytime hiding places and sleeping places. If you know of such a sparrow living-community, please announce it immediately online with BirdLife. They will also raffle prizes among the participants ;-)

Wishing you a winged week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Staycation at 25hours Hotel
CitySpotterGirl has been preaching it for years: holidays in your own city are hip! And then to live in the lap of luxury – that’s what the staycation of the 25hours Hotel promises. The multi-coloured hotel under the hip attic bar has now an offer exclusively for the Viennese: But this isn’t only about low prices for beautiful rooms and Vienna panorama. You are picked up at home by limousine, experience a private date with Klimt or Schiele and explore the city with Schindelhauer bikes. If this offer piques your curiosity, you can now book at many Viennese hotels at a reduced price with “experience your capital”.

Stefan Oláh: Vienna…different
Photographer Stefan Oláh embarks on an architectural treasure hunt through Vienna: whether it be hidden behind building entrances, in depots or warehouses – with his eye for special things, Olah directs his lens at unnoticed and underestimated buildings. Because there is architecture to marvel at in Vienna even beyond the Ringstrasse. Starting today, the exhibition in the first district presents a “different” Vienna in large-format photographs. Interior views of the unusual Domenig House in Favoritenstraße are on display, as well as photographs of the former “20er Haus”. The vernissage runs all day.

Late-Night at Steffl
At a late hour it’ll get loud and powerful in St. Stephen's Cathedral today. The prelude to the Wien Modern festival, Austria's largest festival for new music, wants to bring “ecstatic sound architecture” into the huge gothic space. Conductor Sylvain Cambreling has orchestral sound masses to shape with Messiaen's enormous World War requiem, organist Iveta Apkalna has a no less impressive sound volume at her disposal on the new, just completed giant organ. Impressive music, a lot of atmosphere, the cathedral bathed in dim light – will be an evening with goose bumps guaranteed!

Designing Nature
When the days become shorter, the faces become longer...but now the moping is over! Autumn grouches can make their lives more colourful and today they conjure up an autumnal work of art, from pumpkin arrangements to leaf garlands. A variety of plant materials and the expertise of a master florist are available. For Solveig Kelber, floristry is a way to create common ground and express your feelings. She shows different floristic techniques with which you can design nature and thus get closer to it. Go for the arrangement!

 Dianabad
Final Swim at Dianabad
Over and done with: the Dianabad is closing forever, even a petition could not save the building in which the Danube Waltz was first performed in 1867. Its historical mosaics will be archived, what will become of the building afterwards is unclear. Only today and tomorrow you can take a last wave bath, sweat in the sauna or dash down the slide on the tire. One last time, setting sail on pink flamingo swimming islands before the plug is finally pulled! It's now or never again, on Saturday evening the key will be turned and closed. For good.

Opening Kimbo Dogs
Anyone who has ever walked through a design market in Vienna with a growling stomach is familiar with the smell: Kimbo Dogs! And now – good news – the hip sausage in bread will settle down for the winter. As of today, the successful concept “gourmet hot dog” has arrived in the 8th district. With Australian flair and high-quality ingredients from Austria, Kimbo Dogs will fight any persistent food cravings. In addition to creative sausages, the menu also includes salads, chili and milkshakes: proof that fast food doesn't have to be boring!

Halloween at the Drive-in Cinema
Sometimes there are good things about Corona too: The drive-in cinema of Groß-Enzersdorf on the outskirts of Vienna was revived thanks to it. And today is the last movie night on four wheels! As a final performance before the winter break, the drive-in cinema will of course show a screen shocker on Halloween: You can see the sequel to the horror classic “Halloween”, set 40 years after the original by John Carpenter. Serial killer Michael Myers –commendably wearing a mask – is in a mental institution and takes off to ambush his old rival Jamie Lee Curtis. Jumpy folks, hold the popcorn tight!

Coconut or chocolate? As you know, you usually prefer one to the other, but that doesn't matter much at the Niemetz Halloween Workshop. Here you can snack on as many Schwedenbomben as you like and you can even prepare them yourself. To celebrate the day, the sweet kisses are then decorated in a spooky way. From the fondant ghost to the coconut monster – there are no limits to your imagination. Psst: if you dress up and come to the workshop in costume you get a sweet surprise on top of everything. And by the way: CitySpotterGirl only likes the chocolate ones. Exclusively!

Schönbrunn Palace Park
Only for tourists, as if! The park of Schönbrunn Palace may serve mainly as a backdrop for Instagram photos nowadays, but in reality it is the baroque statement of a ruling dynasty. A guided tour through this unique monument of imperial power reveals many a secret today. During a walk along chamber gardens, boskets and lawn bowls, you will hear about the cultural history of this imperial garden, what it is all about with its many statues and about the life of the Habsburgs in their summer residence. Put on some sturdy shoes and enjoy the fresh air!

The Viennese in China
Between hope and culture shock: during the Nazi regime, Shanghai was the last chance of refuge for many Austrian Jews. Dr. Feng Shan Ho, the Consul General of China in Vienna, issued thousands of visas for the “city above the sea” at that time – against the will of the Chinese government. The refugees struggled with large camps, diseases, the unfamiliar climate and the language barrier. Despite great challenges, a district with coffee houses, sausage stands and wine taverns emerged in Shanghai: “Little Vienna”. Great exhibition!

Klenk and Scheuba
From Ibiza to expense accounts – political scandals are piling up in Austria. Falter editor-in-chief Florian Klenk and cabaret artist Florian Scheuba take a look at the biggest corruption scandals of recent years in a pointed, reflective and above all well-researched way. Together, the two Florians cook up a mixture of investigative journalism, satire and social criticism and dig up many a connection, context and coincidence. A reality check with some good entertainment value, where the laughter will sometimes get stuck in your throat, though.

Art for life – that has two meanings at today's Neunerhaus art auction. On the one hand, you can buy a work of art by renowned artists for your own four walls. On the other hand, a purchase supports the offers of Neunerhaus, which enables homeless people and people at risk of poverty in Vienna to lead a self-determined life. Among the works to be auctioned are great artist names such as Martha Jungwirth and Herbert Brandl. For the first time you can also join the bidding via livestream. Violetta Parisini Concert
To understand and to be understood – that is what Violetta Parisini's songs are all about. In her new album “Alles Bleibt” she sings about change, human vulnerability and overcoming crises. An almost prophetic work, after all, the album was already released in February. The fact that Parisini studied philosophy also resonates in her music. She sings in German for the first time now and addresses everything that moves us in her lyrics. Often melancholic and yet full of life, Violetta Parisini and her band create an evening full of emotion and depth.

The Doderergasse
The Austrian bestselling author Heimito von Doderer almost won the Nobel Prize for Literature. More than 50 years after his death, Nadja Bucher resurrects him in her new novel “Die Doderergasse”: in the 1980s in the body of the girl Marie, between council flats and Nena’s hit 99 Luftballons. Today, Bucher's literary tour takes us to the places in the novel, explains the background and shows the Großfeld complex from an unknown angle. At the concluding reading, you will also encounter Adolf Loos. Also as a born-again ;-)

Bicycle flea market
We used to mothball our bikes around this time of the year and store them in the cellar. With the mild winters we have now that's no longer necessary – now we cycle all year. And the super-practical bicycle flea market in the WUK still takes place every first Wednesday of the month – with many bikes from private sellers. Simply test them, get advice and negotiate the price. The self-help workshop is also open for repairs and spare parts. And if you have one bike too many – just come at 15:00 with your ID and with a little luck collect money!

EiferSucht
A skyscraper, a lawyer and three women, what could possibly go wrong? Helen's husband Lazlo is cheating on her – two floors down. Her opponent Yana is young, successful and wants only one thing: to get rid of Helen. What follows is a virtual mud wrestling match by email. And then there is the student Iris, who is also after Lazlo. Esther Vilar puts sharp-tongued monologues in the mouths of her adversaries, which are both dramatic and neurotic. Three women are fighting for a man without scruples or inhibitions. Only the man is clueless ;-)

 Sissi Vogler
Refished
This makes grandma happy too: Refished-captain Sissi Vogler has moved into the ninth district with her old dining room furniture and has furnished her first store for cheerfully colourful bags made of upcycled cement bags and fish food bags. Bubbling fish and iconic logos decorate shoppers, bags and backpacks, which are light, water-repellent and robust thanks to the material. So they can take a lot. The production is transparent and fair: everything is made by hand in a workshop for mine victims in Cambodia, the seamstresses even sign the pieces. The stylish old building boutique opens this week!

Boxwood
Looks stylish, this place. Like some kind of modern country house style, with giant velvet sofas between the dining tables, playful wallpaper, floor-to-ceiling windows and lots of plants. Shortly before the lockdown, newcomer Benjamin Buxbaum (aha!) opened his second restaurant here at the entrance to Heiligenkreuzerhof. Regional and Mediterranean dishes are supplied from the kitchen, cleverly interpreted – truffled Eiernockerl, fish & chips from Waldviertler catfish and salsiccia burgers. From creative breakfasts to inexpensive lunch menus and elegant evenings: the Boxwood is a tip for any time of day.
