"Heya Girls!"
Adolf Loos called them the “Court Counselor’s dilettante daughters”, Oswald Haerdtl spoke of the “unheard-of doll business”. They were both referring to the same thing: women, who had the audacity to become artists. Because around 1900, Vienna was also a city of women. Many female artists were part of the dawning of the modern era, even though they were denied access to the art academies and forbidden to be part of artist associations. Today all of those women are forgotten. Most of them came from Jewish families, had to go into exile or died in an extermination camp of the National Socialists. Thanks to the Jewish Museum this lost treasure has been brought to light again. The new exhibition “The Better Half” features 44 Viennese female artists who formed an important part of the art world at the turn of the century. There are extraordinary discoveries to be made – the pottery pieces of Vally Wieselthier, the paintings of Bettina Ehrlich-Bauer, the expressionist works of Helene Taussig. It feels like Vienna’s history is becoming richer through the return of these women. Thanks for that!
Wishing you a beautiful week

Jumping Cats – Daniel G. de Koekkoek
Not only the CitySpotterGirl has immersed herself into the cats-hype (surprise next week) – the photographer Daniel Gehbhart de Koekkoek has devoted himself vehemently to cat research as well. And he found out that cats that think they are not being watched fly around the living room. He has made it his mission to document the aerobatic skills of the flying cats – when they stand still in the air in acrobatic contortions like a “Freeze” ;-) The cult photographs can be seen from today on. Definitely sign up for the opening since a big crowd is to be expected!

Vienna Truffle Market at Stephansplatz
Why you would need a fashion show in order to open a truffle market is something we don’t really know, but oh well ;-) Anyways, tonight and against the backdrop of the “Steffl” there will be a Red Carpet show in the honor of the truffle, the market itself opens in the afternoon – by the way, for the first time in the center of the city. This and next weekend you can buy fresh truffles and truffle products directly from various merchants and you can also taste the exquisite tuber at the Cantinetta Antinori. On Sunday there will even be a truffle clown ensuring a fun shopping trip.

Treasure Hunting
Interesting idea! As we know, the Wuk is an enormously big and contorted brick building with many undiscovered corners. Starting today all the curious and adventurous people out there can wander around and look for things that can’t be seen at first glance. Artist Charlotta Ruth turned the whole area into an obstacle course – and the treasure hunters can collect things through analog and digital hints, just like at a treasure hunt. The participants will find themselves in unusual situations; they will receive to-do lists and answer questions. Harrison Ford says hello ;-)

Giant flea market & vintage flea market
Browsing alarm! This is definitely a flea market that lives up to the term and doesn’t only include way too expensive (pseudo) luxury antiques: junk goods big shot Wolf Siegel is dissolving his warehouse and therefore he is hosting a giant flea market. And it really does include a huge selection of cool sideboards, lamps, chairs and tables – also for smaller wallets. Stylistically all decades since the 1920s will be represented and also a lot of small stuff. By the way, today at the Kunsttankstelle Ottakring you can also buy chic vintage pieces, most of all clothes and accessories.

Weekend of graphics
The motto this weekend: think outside the box! This weekend, various museums will be presenting a special program around their graphic treasures and show just how diverse art on paper can be. Today at a workshop at the Albertina you can learn the high-pressure technology of the colored woodcut and explore the collections of the house during guided tours. Also presented will be printed graphics as the first type of mass media in the world. And at the Leopold Museum this Sunday will be all about the secrets of paper restoration: you can learn how to brighten up yellowed paper or how to de-crinkle book pages.

 Tipsy Elves
Ugly Christmas Sweaters
OMG! Wearing these Christmas sweaters one can make a bigger fool of themselves than movie-klutz Bridget Jones who wore a similarly ugly knit piece in front of her dream guy Mark Darcy back in the days. The US cult label Tipsy Elves doesn’t leave anything out when it comes to their purposely-kitschy Christmas designs – ranging from cats with Santa Clause hats to huge golden bows to moose in definitely not Christmassy poses. And now the quirky awful sweaters can be bought at a stand at the Advent market at Spittelberg. Now the question is: when to wear it and who to give it to?

Great Night of Reading in Hietzing
It really is mostly a night of crime novels: two great authors of the Austrian crime novel scene are bringing blood and thunder to a usually rather sedate part of Hietzing. Bernhard Aichner (“Totenfrau”, “Totenhaus”) and Thomas Raab (“Still”,”Metzger-Krimis”) will be reading thrilling passages from their most recent books. Crime scene is the Don Bosco house in Hietzing, initiator is the very pleasant book and present store Ober St.Veit. Plate images from 300 years
Neither a regular nor a festive day can exist without it: the plate. On the table it doesn’t only serve as a means to place food on but also as a carrier of loud or silent messages. Those change in connection with cultural and social habits, just like decorations and cooking. The new special exhibition at Augarten presents plate images ranging from botanic to copies of art to architecture and to ornamentation. The images also give an interesting insight into the respective era. By the way, Eat-Artist Daniel Spoerri created one of his trap pictures for the porcelain museum and he will be in attendance at the opening tonight!

Power strategies in male-dominated business
Unfortunately a fact that has been illustrated by the US election campaign once again: women in powerful positions are judged differently than men: a lot harsher and more unfair. Whoever wants to reach certain goals as a businesswoman, should better be aware of the power structures in the male-dominated world. Tonight business coach Nicola C. Widmann will be talking about power strategies and typically manipulative tactics of the top dogs and also the most common traps when climbing the career ladder. Invisible craftsmanship
There are so many spots in the city where people are working their crafts skills but usually we don’t even notice. That is why the project “Unsichtbares Handwerk” (“Invisible Craftsmanship”) in the 7th and 8th district wants to put the focus on people who are working in old or new crafts and are therefore enriching the area – ranging from upholsterers to pleating workshops. Their stories are being told through a series of posters, which can be explored during guided tours. Also offered are story-cafes, exhibitions and workshops – just like today at the rattan and basket ware distributor Dieroff where you can try weaving. Everything for free.

Guided tour at the “Tiefenspeicher”
An insiders’ tip for the explorers out there! Usually, the “underworld” of the Museum of Natural History is not open to the public, but now it can be explored every third Wednesday of the month during an exclusive guided tour “behind the scenes”. Down in the “Tiefenspeicher” (underground storage), four (!!) levels beneath the earth there is the mammal depot of the museum where herds of stuffed animals are stored – anything from deer to rabbit. Also very interesting to find out how this zoo of dead soft toys is preserved and maintained. Or maybe there are no moths so far beneath the earth?

Now, what do the boys from the Vienna Boys Choir do after their voices break? Well, at least some of them join the dynamic Viennese men-vocals group VieVox and keep on singing. Tonight within the scope of Voicemania the eight young men will be performing at the Theater am Spittelberg and they will show what’s possible when it comes to the prestigious art of A-cappella singing. The new program “Opernsalat” doesn’t only include parts of “Le Nozze di Figaro” or the “Magic Flute” but also hits from the Comedian Harmonists. Teresa Scheicher studied design in Berlin, loves paper and has to – according to her – “always be doing something with her hands”. The idea of having her own store has been stuck in her head for some time and now the dream of her very own Paperbird stationary shop has come true in the 3rd district. There are paper cranes she folded herself hanging from the ceiling of the noticeably reduced and full of light shop and beneath it paper lovers can find anything they could ever want: pretty wrapping paper, greeting cards, origami paper, note pads and nice writing utensils ranging from golden rulers to fountain pens – everything chosen with style.
