editorial

"Heya Girls!"
If you think the artful flower picture “Lotus Garden” by the British photographer and “waste dissector” Mandy Barker is pretty, you should have a closer look. It is composed of discarded plastic pieces, which, together with 1,826 (!) tons of other garbage, are washed up on the beaches of Hong Kong every day. That’s not beautiful, but ugly. And – after Werner Boote’s cinema documentary “Plastic Planet“ of 2009 - it reminds us once again of the catastrophic consequences of brainless plastic usage. While Barker catapults Asian plastic to space in her art, her photographer colleagues Simon Norfolk and Eduardo Leal keep a close lens on environmental damage in Africa and America. The result: scary, seemingly utopian photo series of glacier melt on Mount Kenya or PVC-contaminated landscapes in Bolivia. Incredible, how good we, the “children of plastic age”, are at ignoring facts and whitewashing. But in the new exhibition “Seen on Earth“ reality becomes so obvious that I just disposed of my (last!) plastic bottle. Promise!

Wishing you a lovely week

Consultation „Dog & Dog training“
The editorial office cats may forgive me, but now we are talking about dogs for a change. Or rather, about dog owners. Because both neo dog owners and experienced mistresses always have hundreds of questions. About dog training, problems, everyday life. And Olga Waitz knows the answers. The dog psychologist and behaviour coach grew up with four-legged-animals and knows which way the dog jumps. Every two weeks, she shares her “Wow!Wow!” know-how straightforwardly in an “open” consulting hour in the Werkbuchcafe. (Owners are welcome, dogs need to stay at home.) Today at 4pm!

Meet me at the Prater!
Viennese pleasures since 1766: As of today, the Wien Museum celebrates the legendary 250-year-old entertainment mile in the 2nd district. There are countless thrilling Prater stories: First it was an imperial hunting ground, then a hot spot for spectacular mass events, world exhibition address and temporarily also the “Venice in Vienna” – with genuine canals and gondolas. More than 650 exhibits testify to a turbulent era of the cult institution – the most spectacular one, a 4-metre Calafati figure, is not enthroned in the museum, but in front of it.

 City Farm Schönbrunn
Workshop in the City Farm Schönbrunn
Not only Josef Guggenmos’ old, sunny children’s book reads “I sound the bells for spring”, but also in Schönbrunn daffodils and tulips are springing a race. It’s only logical that the City Farm also starts into the gardening season and sows colourful spring seeds in the first workshop of the year. Today, garden expert Stefan Scholz shows hobby gardeners what to do in March so that flowerbeds and boxes will spring properly later on. Seeds will be pre-grown, thinned out and reproduced - and participants may take home the cuttings. Oh yes, and you’ll also find great tips about “Gardening in Vienna” here!

1st Easter market „Genusserwachen“
The beautiful Palais Niederösterreich in Herrengasse comes up with a completely new event today: an Easter adventure market. At the culinarily varied Easter festival of the province around Vienna more than 50 rural traditional manufacturers demonstrate their skills for the first time and under the motto “pleasure awakening” they invite to communal DIY sessions in iconic “home-made” stations. They polish Easter eggs with natural colours, braid fluffy raisin Striezel and arrange original palm branches. Plus: spring-like magic-cuisine, a speciality market and free guided tours through the Palais Niederösterreich!

Qigong for your eyes
A good piece of advice for people like the CitySpotterGirl who are sitting in front of their computer all the time. TCM understands visual impairment as a qi deficiency due to different causes. The simple Daoyin Yangsheng Gong exercises for the eyes are practiced in a sitting position and cover a broad range of application possibilities. They provide help to people who spend much time sitting in front of the computer screen and suffer from eye strain in their profession. The training can also strongly reduce short-sightedness and long-sightedness.

Cécile McLorin Salvant: For One to Love
She is only 26 and her songs already spread such a love-, suffering- and life-experience that she easily overshadows Jazz Grand Dames such as Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald: the newly-fledged Grammy award winner Cécile McLorin Salvant! Today, the likeable and self-confident New Yorker with a soft spot for eccentric clothes finally sings a concert in Vienna. Reach your ideal weight with Bach flowers
Diets are a dime a dozen, but – as many of you know from painful experience – permanent abstaining in truth doesn’t help. Because reasons for wrong eating habits are often related to mental health. Stress, lack of body awareness, lack of self-love or the inner child longing for chocolate. This is where the Bach flower essences of the British homeopath Edward Bach come into play: They help us change destructive (eating) patterns. In her seminar, Maria Grandegger presents individual flowers and everyone gets her own personal flower mix.

Reading is an adventure inside your head. Herbert Bauer’s exceptional book fair is an adventure as well. He has been collecting antique treasures for more than 20 (!) years and from time to time he organises a great market at the VHS. This year, 25 private exhibitors & smallest-scale enterprises expose for sale their bibliophilic rarities, historic books and paper antiques. From paperbacks to children’s books to first editions - a true treasure trove! Admission is free and since reading always makes hungry, bookworms are provided with a small buffet.

The CitySpotterGirl enthusiastically joins her walk! A political classic is on the programme today: first we chase local suffragettes, then we have a look at the fights and successes of the Austrian women’s movement and finally we check out exceptional females from the Habsburg period, Nazi regime and of present times.

District Museums' Day
This day is an annual red-letter-day in my calendar. After all, there are hardly any other places that provide you with such interesting insights into the Viennese soul and neighbourhood secrets than the Viennese district museums. This year’s motto is “Game and Sports”, but lots of the activities are carried out passively ;-) In the 15th district, chess and table football are part of the programme. In the first district, people swing epees, sabres and foils and in the sixth the female football team FC Mariahilf plays a match. Special programme in all districts. And for free!

Group exhibition 30x30x30
No, this is not the new dream format for narrow-minded ones, but -on the contrary- the title of a new art exhibition in Vienna. 30 participating artists from Austria and abroad defined their very personal measure of contemporary art with 30 x 30 cm and dedicated themselves to small-size works with intensity and generosity. The outcome was a great variety of works, for example: the socio-critical “Red Invoice“ braiding of plastic bags by the graphic artist Irene Wölfl or a work without words, but with plaster on wood by the sculptor Anna-Maria Bogner’s. All pictures are on sale!

Tulku Lobsang: Love and relationship
Oh dear, the time has come again, the CitySpotterGirl is longing for peace, joy and harmony. And for love. Today, the renowned Buddhist master Tulku Lobsang holds a lecture about the things that make us lovable and how we can experience long-lasting happiness without expectations and negative emotions. That sounds positive, true and desirable! Once a year the doctor of Tibetan medicine, astrologist and Tantrayana teacher travels through Europe, Asia and the USA to share his ancient knowledge. Today he stops in Vienna and, together with the seeking persons, he smiles towards (love) happiness.

Talking against arsonists
Be it Caesar, Gandhi or Thatcher – famous speakers and their words have always affected mankind and made history. Salon 5 has now initiated the best-of-rhetoric-series “Reden” where controversial fragments of contemporary history of all ages are brought back to life once a month. The series starts today with Cicero’s famous charge against the Catilinarian conspiracy of 63 BC and Joschka Fischer’s speech of justification of the NATO mission in Kosovo in 1999. Brilliant theatrical setting: the ceremonial hall in the Old Town Hall. Let’s hope that many women will take the floor in the future.
