Thomas Windisch: Last Orders
Lost places are abandoned, no longer used locations whose bizarre beauty lies in their decay. The photographer Thomas Windisch from Graz has been searching for such ghost places all over Europe for almost 10 years and captures them in pictures: abandoned hotels, warehouses, barracks and psychiatric hospitals are his favourite landscapes. Nature likes to reclaim parts of the deserted architecture and the furnishings forgotten in it. Every place tells a story – and that, although Windisch photographs neither people nor animals. The exhibition opens today!
ip.Forum, Schönbrunner Straße 218-220, 1120 Vienna. 7 April 17:00 to 20:00. Free entry. Please register. Web

Carla Easter Market
Easter bunnies at Carla: Around Easter, the two Vienna branches of the Caritas second-hand shops traditionally offer a huge selection of Easter decorations such as colourful eggs, fluffy chicks and ceramics in cute bunny style. Up to and including Holy Saturday, you can buy decorations for palm branches and the like for a small penny! And you know that the money will be put to good use: Refugees from Ukraine currently receive a 100-euro voucher there so that they can afford the necessities of life. Since this will lead to a big crowd, you should plan for a little waiting time at the cash desk.
Carla Mittersteig und Nord, 1050 and 1210 Vienna. Mon-Fri 9:00 to 18:00, Sat 9:00 to 15:00. Web

Tin Glazing and Image Culture
A well-kept secret: Vienna's MAK owns one of the most important majolica collections in the world. Majolica is artistically painted, tin-glazed ceramic that shaped the sophisticated table culture of the Renaissance from Italy. Old masters such as Raphael created models for their design! The paintings, which have not faded to this day, often depict scenes from the legends of the gods or the Bible. They were not only beautiful tableware, but also stimulated sophisticated table conversations at the noble courts of Northern Europe. Now, for the first time, the MAK is showing its beautiful collection of the stylish luxury ceramics!
MAK, Stubenring 5, 1010 Vienna. Until 7 August Tue 10:00 to 21:00, Wed-Sun until 18:00. 15 €. Web

Christian Eigner: Solo Drum
Christian Eigner is not just any Austrian drummer: he’s the live drummer for the English synth-pop group Depeche Mode. The band is world-famous, but hardly anyone here knows that a Viennese is a band member. At the age of 16, he already played with greats like Willi Resetarits, Georg Danzer and Peter Cornelius. In 1997, a coincidence led to the professional drummer meeting keyboardist Dave Clayton in London, who worked with Depeche Mode on their album. Since then, Eigner has toured the world with the band – except today, when he is at Radiokulturhaus. Enjoy the silence ;-)

A Vision for World Peace
Current world events can often leave you helpless and at a loss: what can an individual possibly do about war, poverty and a pandemic? This evening, Gen-la Kelsang Kunsang will present an idea rooted in Buddhism on how everyone can personally ensure peace and contentment in the world. Kunsang is the spiritual leader of the New Kadampa Tradition in Austria and today he will explain offline and online how you can develop inner peace by means of meditation and how to use that to promote outer peace in the world.
Kadampa Meditationszentrum, Schleifmühlgasse 15, 1040 Vienna. Also possible online. 8 April 19:00. 10 €. Web

Fermentation for Beginners
This Saturday will make intestinal bacteria just as happy as taste buds. For this morning, you will be initiated into the secrets of lacto-fermentation – which not only preserves fresh vegetables, but also creates microorganisms during the fermentation process that are very, very good for our digestion. And it's delicious too! Today's basic course not only illustrates basics such as the right salt content and which fruit and vegetable combinations are suitable, but it’s also an Easter special: eggs and seasonal spring herbs will also be fermented.
Wild & Wunder, Wilhelmstraße 30/2, 1120 Vienna. 9 April 10:00 to 14:00. 130 €. Web

An der schönen blauen Donau
When black creatives work together in this country, the external circumstances often steal the show from the real star: the art itself. The new art platform “genuine” wants to counteract this and has brought together renowned artists who (unfortunately only until Tuesday) are putting their impressive works on display! Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński just had a solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle, Cameron Ugbodus' photographs were exhibited in London and published in Italian Vogue. For today's vernissage, the exhibition is open until 22:00, then there's an afterparty at Aux Gazelles!

Hanna Manufactory Easter Market
The Tracht-manufactory Hanna from Salzburg turns 70 already, and Easter is near too – so there are several reasons to celebrate! This weekend, the Viennese branch holds a market where you can buy little things made of colourful traditional costume fabrics: bread baskets, rape cushions and wax cloths are on offer alongside creative jewellery from the Ohrangerie label and egg liqueur from Toni Mörwald. You can get cosmetic advice from make-up artist Martina Sekkal or chat with Hanna heiress Konstanze Kurz. The latter, by the way, designs the label's innovative, delightful Tracht patterns herself!

Route planner to street art
If you feel like venturing to go out today despite the unpredictable April weather, try the guide to cool Viennese street art. The Wien Museum's online route planner guides you to 33 colourful murals (meaning large street art works) which are scattered all over the 15th district. From Westbahnhof, the two-hour tour first leads to the “Rotating Wall”: particularly exciting, because the area is constantly being redesigned. Keep your head up in Reindorfgasse: a cat is hiding on a roof ledge. The walls at Schwender-Markt could almost be called an outdoor gallery – every metre a new work of art.
Start: Westbahnhof, Europaplatz 2/3, 1150 Vienna. Free of charge. Web

Kalvarienberg Festival
For over 350 years, a real Lenten market was celebrated at Hernalser Kalvarienberg. This nostalgic and colourful carnival has been history for a few years now, but nevermind – because it became the Kalvarienberg Festival! Up to and including Easter Monday, there is a lot on offer at the Easter-decorated Kalvarienberg: concerts from soul to Wiener Lied, craft demonstrations and daily workshops where you can, for example, paint some Easter eggs. Today the night watchman from Alt-Ottakring will tell amusing historical anecdotes, followed by the Viennese blues-rock band Riff'N'Taff. Very nice!

Online Zen Mediation
Just sitting there calmly and serenely can be quite a trial of patience. Zen meditation is about experiencing the moment and being aware of the moment without wanting to change it. Sounds quite tempting. How this works in practice is trained today in the online meditation of the Mishoan Zen Centre. The eyes are closed, thoughts are allowed to arise in silence and are then supposed to move on again. The relaxing technique will be practised together once a week. The link to the free Zoom meeting can be found on the homepage.

Martin Herzberg
If you sometimes wish your own life had the right musical soundtrack, you've come to the right place. Pianist Martin Herzberg composes music reminiscent of the soundtracks of “Amélie” and “The Intouchables”. Accompanied by an ensemble of professional musicians, Herzberg puts his listeners in a very special mood that invites melancholic dreaming and tentative hope. The phrase that his music is moving sounds very trite – but in the case of the Berlin composer it is appropriate for a change. Today at the WUK!

Yuri's Night
What Easter is for Christians, 12 April is for space enthusiasts: Today in 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to fly into the “cosmos” and returned safely. Since then, 12 April is not only celebrated on board every Russian space station – the quirky custom has spread all over the world! Yuri's Night is also celebrated in Vienna, this year at the Museum of Technology: an international panel of experts shows fascinating images from space and reports on what's new in astronomy and space travel. Afterwards, you can visit the museum's new space exhibition. Free entry!

Citrus fruit rarities at Casa Caria
While the fruit and vegetable season is just beginning here in this country, the most incredible organic citrus fruits of the late harvest are still available at the delicatessen shop Casa Caria! The two branches of the citrus paradise have a terrific selection of seductively fragrant rarities with highly diverse flavours: from the small Cedro Diamante from southern Italy to the large Cedro Citrus Medica Maxima from Florence. The last fresh mandarins, bitter oranges and the Limone Amalfitano, from which the traditional limoncello is made, are also still in stock.

Hubert von Goisern
“Everybody knows that it doesn't grow on meadows, and we can't eat it, but it's good to burn.” It's been over 10 years since Hubert von Goisern landed a surprise success with his song “Brenna tuats guat”. Recently it has been quieter around the singer-songwriter – no wonder, as he has (most successfully) written his first novel! But now it's time for new music again, and so Hubert von Goisern, actually Hubert Achleitner from Bad Goisern in Upper Austria, will present his witty mixture of rock, pop and folk music today and tomorrow at the Konzerthaus!
Vienna Konzerthaus, Lothringerstraße 20, 1030 Vienna. 13 + 14 April 20:00. 49.90-69.90 €. Web

Discovering the design jungle: hidden in a backyard is a spacious loft space with large factory windows. Treasury is not for everywoman: that certain unconventional something has to be important to you. But then it is a – admittedly high-priced – design treasure! Here, you can get style advice and unique pieces from designer Stefanie Hofer, interior inspiration from Claudia Maschke or simply check out beautiful things. And there's good espresso too ;-)

Oktogon
After renovation work, the Oktogon am Himmel is now open again – and “am Himmel” really is a very special place in the Vienna Woods. The view over gently descending vineyards down to the city, a light breeze – perfect for a spring outing, especially since the Oktogon provides the right catering. The octagonal, wooden restaurant is fully glazed all around and beautifully situated in the middle of nature. And you can eat and drink decently here – from breakfast on the weekend (definitely make a reservation) to a glass of Himmelwein, which grows right in front of the terrace.
