"Heya Girls!"
I don’t want to talk about my autumn depression here but let’s put it this way: there are seasons that make me happier. Seasons, in which the weather is warmer, sunnier and brighter, when flowers smell sweetly and birds chirp. Most conveniently for me and my worse for wear mood, just this week Vienna’s first Hawaii Hula Dance Festival will be taking place – floral leis, aloha, hip swings and wonderful music that tells stories about the ocean and the wind. Life really is like a kitsch novel sometimes! Hawaii will be in Vienna for three days: you have the chance to beam yourself to the South Pacific during 17 different workshops of the Koulani school from Waipahu. These workshops include learning Hula choreographies, weaving floral leis, playing Ukulele and creating Kahili hair accessories. And everything is suitable for both beginners and advanced people. The highlight of the weekend will be the Hula dance show this Sunday of the Hawaiian group Halau Hula ‘O Hokulani. And remember: Hawaii is not only a place on the map but also a state of mind!

Wishing you a softly waving week

Fiva x JRBB
That’s what’s up! HipHop, but completely different: a big band of 20 people, a string quartet, a DJ and above all the awesome female rapper Fiva are going to create truly ecstatic sounds tonight at the WUK. The poetic and multi-facetted lyrics by the German rapper, who is well known in Austria for working as a presenter on Radio FM4, work just as well with the warm sounds of a string quartet as they do with the hymnal music of wind instruments or the phat grooves of drums and bass. Just like the German rappers Fanta4, but better, because she’s a woman ;-) So, better get tickets now! Listen in here.

“Es lebe die Unvernunft!”
The little devil on my shoulder is smiling widely just upon hearing the title of this book (in English: long live the foolishness). To do what we usually don’t even dare to think about – sounds interesting! The author of the book Andrea Latritsch-Karlbauer tried out all kinds of (im)possibilities during her self-experiment and ended up writing a passionate plea for being unreasonable. She trained with the best martial arts artists of the world and lived in a lighthouse with her husband. She met a 104-year-old man who still rides his bike and a 96-year-old lady who is looking for romance and got them to reveal their secrets. More at tonight’s book presentation!

Getting the creeps in Vienna
Former cemeteries, execution sites, myths and facts: there are many eerily beautiful stories to be told in the city. Strangely buried skeletons were found underneath Minoritenplatz and there is a ghost haunting the Hofburg, appearing before the Habsburg family members before they die. An aristocratic woman is under the suspicion of having been a vampire. The hangman is selling macabre remedies. And the aging “Pestjungfrau” is being pushed to hell over and over again. Vienna from a completely different perspective!

Around Vienna
An uphill battle, especially for your knees! The track around the City of Vienna is a whole 130 kilometers long and is to be conquered today – and only by foot. The predefined “finisher” time is 25 hours and since that is anything but a walk around town for untrained wanderers or runners, there will also be a 64 km long alternative and a relay for both options. In order to master the whole round, the start is at 6:00 in the morning in Floridsdorf. Alternatively the half round starts at 11:00 and shortens the track by crossing the Danube Island. Phew, that is still more than enough! ;-)

Pumpkin Festival at the Himmel
Let’s hope for great weather again this weekend. Because the pumpkin farmers from Styria are coming to Vienna. Above the city at the Himmel on the grass between the octagon and the Tree of Life circle, the Styrian farmers will present all kinds of delicacies from different regions in Styria and we will have the opportunity to wander along the pumpkin gourmet street and taste culinary treats like pumpkin soup, pumpkin cabbage, strudel, pumpkin seed oil, Schilcher wines, Schilcher Sturm and Vulkanland ham. You can also buy lots of things (jams!) – and whoever wants to, can start carving pumpkins for Halloween.

Cyanotype workshop
An interesting technique for crafting lovers! At the design fair “Blickfang” at the MAK you can learn the technique of cyanotype in different workshops. The premium printing process producing beautiful cyan-blue colors was already used in the 19th century in order to develop photographs. How it works is that a chemical is applied to a surface made of textile, leather or wood, then the desired motive is put onto the surface and exposed to light. At the workshop you can choose between creating portraits in picture frames or hip printed bags made of cloth. More about the “Blickfang” can be looked up on our portal!

„Unsere Fabrik“ by Petra Rainer
People at work are a popular motive of the photographer Petra Rainer who lives in Vorarlberg. For her picture book “Unsere Fabrik” (Our Factory) she went to different production facilities in Vorarlberg ranging from Ölz to Doppelmayr during the day and night shift and always accompanied by her camera. She skillfully captured situations that illustrate the living environment of a factory. Her delicate and esthetic picture series shows people but also details from their working environment. During the photo month “Eyes On” in Vienna you can see the factory pictures until the middle of November.

Tihar – Festival of Lights
Tihar is one of Nepal’s most beautiful festivals: it is dedicated to the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and luck. On this very day she steps down from the world of gods onto the earth and a sea of lights from people’s homes is leading her way. Everywhere in Nepal thousands of candles and lights are lit on this night. And the Nepal restaurant Yak + Yeti which is highly treasured by the CitySpotterGirl, is trying to bring this atmosphere to Vienna. The festival is celebrated with a big buffet including all kinds of national Nepalese dishes. Please make a reservation!

Halloween: Palais Coburg & the Prater
Instead of blood there will be a big dose of luxury to be enjoyed at the Palais Coburg tonight. The Irish catholic tradition is celebrated with a scarily beautiful candlelight dinner deep down in the medieval cellar vaults. The spooky appetizer before dinner comes in the form of the Halloween episode of the TV series “The Addams Family” and afterwards a four-course meal will generate culinary excitement. By the way, the Halloween parade at the Wurstelprater tonight will be a lot wilder and less elegant with lots of different zombies and other horrific creatures lurking around.

Poetics of materials
While our reality is disappearing behind the media’s flood of images and life is drifting into digitalism there is a “new materialism” to be found in the art world. All the sudden the materials and the material phenomenon of reality are gaining great significance once again. What the works of artists like Anna Schneider, Benjamin Hirte and Sonia Leimer have in common is the usage of objects they came upon during everyday life – they work with everyday items and “non-artistic” materials. The fascinating results can now be seen at the Leopold Museum.

Dia de Muertos
A nice thought: according to Mexican beliefs the dead visit us from the hereafter on November 1st, the “Dia de Muertos”, and celebrate a happy reunion with the living people. In Vienna, the celebration of the dead will take two weeks at the más at Laudongasse: with a Mexican-kitsch altar full of sacrificial offerings, colorful flowers, “pan de muerto” and skulls. And you toast the dead with “Cocteles de muertos”. Tonight at the WUK there will also be Margaritas, Tequila and South American music inviting you to feel the Latin rhythm and dance. Viva los muertos!

pop-up store „chapeau! wooly joy“
Cold ears? Never again! The passionate professional knitting lover Christina Dubisar says that she stumbled upon her hat company by chance. After the tragic loss of her favorite hat she was just not able to find a new one that she liked and that fit her perfectly. And that is how she started creating the hip luxury designs made of Kashmir, alpaca & co herself. And they aren’t just a delight to look at and compliment even difficult hat-faces but they are also suitable for different hairstyles, because they are not too tight. From today on and for the next 3 months you can buy the super soft wonder hats at a pop-up close to the Stubentor.

Something very different: at a chanter concert today at the beautiful Viennese synagogue you can take a deep look into the Jewish soul. The expressive chanter songs are part of every ceremonial occasion of the Jewish liturgy. Shmuel Barzilai, who grew up in Jerusalem and has been the chief chanter of the Israelite Community in Vienna since 1992 will be giving a concert of traditional religious songs together with the Jewish choir from Moscow. Virginia Woolf – “Der Fels und die Wellen”
The life of the extraordinary Virginia Woolf was a constant up and down, shaped by her bipolar disorder. In her gripping solo performance Petra Gstrein focuses on the two most important relationships of Virginia Woolf based on the exceptional author’s letters, diary entries and literary works. On the one hand that is the relationship with her husband Leonard Woolf who stood by here through suicide attempts and depression and on the other hand her relationship with author colleague Vita Sackville-West. Woolf started a romantic affair with her and honored it literarily in her novel “Orlando”.

Monki
Even though it is also Swedish, low priced and off the racks just like the parent company H&M, it is still quite a bit cooler and bolder: the Swedish fashion chain Monki makes a plea for girls to consider their period as something cool, to be a drama queen once in a while and to love themselves. And they should especially love themselves when they are wearing the hip young Scandinavian style clothes that can now also be bought in Vienna. The first Austrian Monki store is located on Mariahilfer Straße and was already basically run over during the opening day. Hustle and bustle or not, definitely worth a visit!

Now look at that: at the beginning of this week the first Hemp Milk Bar of the world opened its doors in Vienna. Obviously you can’t get anything to smoke there but since hemp is also an incredibly healthy food product you can use it to cook and mix with all kinds of things. Here, shakes and smoothies are made from drinking hemp and fresh fruit or vegetables, the tea is of course hemp leaf tea and even the sandwiches have hemp in them. Everything is vegan, of course. The owners of the cool Milk Bar are a Japanese woman and a Swiss man and they moved here from Geneva just to open this bar. Welcome to Vienna!
