"Heya Girls!"
Well, it will be a little while longer before spring really arrives. For the impatient like me, however, there will be an opportunity next week to create beautiful blossoms. French-born, Vienna-based artist Delphine Léger will give a course on how to create original and long-lasting flowers using branches, paper and glue (photo). The art of making flowers from paper has a long tradition – but no previous knowledge is required for the workshop. The next few days are going to be creative in general! During the holiday week, the Kunst VHS is organising a whole host of short courses using the motto “Muses kiss”, where you can let your imagination run wild. From working with recycled plastics for 3 hours to a 5-day intensive course in digital photography, from trying out Turkish Ebru painting for 3 hours to Chinese ink painting on two afternoons. Plus, corn leaf weaving, carpet weaving, calligraphy – the muses will definitely be rather stressed-out next week ;-)

We welcomed this shop last year with great fanfare, because as Vienna's first period speciality shop, it was definitely a small sensation. And it still is – from today it can be found at a new address and no longer as a shop-in-shop now, but as a stand-alone gem on Lerchenfelderstraße. Ladies still find only the best for their monthly visit here: from menstrual cups to (beautiful!) period panties with a built-in heat pad or yoni herbal steam baths to interesting reading material such as the “ Buch der Tage” by your CitySpotterGirl, for instance. But this one here is really super cool: Robert Comploj is giving glass blowing courses for beginners in his new studio – and when you get to work with the glass guru himself, that's really something! The rock musical “Hedwig and the angry inch” from 1998 is playing there today and tells the story of drag queen Hedwig, who actually lives as a Hansel in the GDR. He has an operation to transform himself into a woman for the dream of a better life, but the operation goes wrong and a few centimetres – an “angry inch” – remain between his legs. Disillusioned, Hedwig flees to America and becomes a chanteuse who is ignored worldwide and falls unhappily in love. Highly emotional with rock music by Stephen Trask!

On the photo walk through the Laxenburg Garden of Lights, a million lights, water features and picturesque locations like the Gothic bridge serve as motifs for luminous photo works. You learn about exposure for evening and night shots, for example, shutter speeds, playing with focus and defocus and how to depict light sources in a star shape. Is Tom Waits actually a Viennese? If not, perhaps he should become one! Until then, Jakob Semotan, aka Thomas, will try to summon the icon with his Viennese interpretations of song lyrics and singing until he, Tom, comes to the Bronski. Well, and the wait is simply turned into a concert, fun, a party! Of course, Semotan's band is also there, with piano, drums, bass and guitar, and they know exactly how to add the necessary flavour to the emotionally very diverse vocals. So if you want to know what Tom Waits sounds like in Viennese: It starts today at 20:30!

Pirouette, pas de deux and plie – the Vienna State Ballet proves just how fiery and modern classical ballet can be with its latest coup “Promethean Fire”. It revolves around the myth of Promethean fire, focusing on the ambivalence of action. This is perfectly captured by four contrasting choreographies that ballet director Martin Schläpfer has put together with modern dance professionals Paul Taylor and Mark Morris. Serious mythology meets humorous gender politics and ends in dances as light as powder on butterfly wings. Today is the premiere!

A deep breath that you can feel down your lungs and deep in your stomach – so liberating! And it’s also the topic of Belinda Kazeem-Kaminski’s current exhibition. At the Phileas, the Austrian artist presents her video and sound installation evolving around the theme of life in the African diaspora. “Respire” shows people from Liverpool who breathe in and out into a red balloon. Belinda wants to symbolise the precariousness of Black existence and create a space for the expansion of Black people's breath as a symbol of liberation. Moving!

Roots of Invisible Entities
“In my experience, nature is feminine.” Now that's a statement to our taste! It comes from Josefina Alanko, who is currently adorning the Strabag Kunstforum with her works. Using female symbols and inspiration from spiritual sources and the matriarchal roots of her country, the Finnish artist creates an impressive mix of ceramics, acrylic painting, textiles, glue, sand and more. The resulting interplay between three-dimensionality and painterly finesse lends her creations a captivating depth. Attention: Only until tomorrow!

It seems to be a trend at the moment for established stores to open a branch – as uppers & downers has now done. The concept store opened 10 years ago in Burggasse and has now expanded to 200 square metres in Kirchengasse and has topped its concept: the selection of premium vintage fashion is even larger, more finely selected and designed for “ rare finds”, which also includes a designer corner. Brand-new here is the Gallery Space, where young artists can exhibit their work. In the future, concerts and other events as well shall take place in the clean vintage haven with a freaky zigzag floor pattern. Very cool!

Yes indeed, doner and kebab can also be made in a fancy way! A small, fine street food snack bar has opened on Taborstraße that wants to show kebabs in a different way. Every day, 90 kilos of beef steaks are marinated here for a day, then placed on the spit by hand and cooked to a crisp on the charcoal grill in front of the guests. The delicious bread that is served with it comes freshly baked in a specially made lavash oven. And those who prefer vegetarian options can stuff themselves with falafel. Of course, they offer everything “to go”, but you can also eat on site in a chic ambience. And the service is incredibly friendly :-)
