"Heya Girls!"
What could possibly be better than strolling around Naschmarkt, enjoying the first rays of sunshine, and diving into the epicurean spring awakening? Exactly: pretty much nothin’. I don’t even care about what feels like 10 million tourists there. One thing that’s hard to believe in all the jostling crowd and narrow lanes: there’s actually one free area left at the market! And as of now, the Market Office will be organizing a motto-market there once a month – behind the stalls along Rechte Wienzeile. It’s being kicked off with “Viennese Products”. Which means that behind tons of dried fruit and Italian Antipasti, Austrian gourmet-producers rock the market with local finesse! “Einmacherin” is bringing her gourmand rillettes, “Kammerer” his sweet tooth-confection, the Gold honey comes from Viennese busy bees, the crispy veggies from Schottenhof, snails from Gugumuck, and unusual insect-delicacies from Zirp. Whoa!
Wishing you a spring-fresh week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

The band Alma was founded in 2011 in Vienna – with four power-women and one man at the hen party – and has raised folk music to a new level. Not one of Alma’s songs remotely sounds like “Musikantenstadl”. Which explains why the Austro-quintet prefers to open Festival Weeks and play in concert halls accompanied by applause and good mood at festivals all over Europe. Tonight, the five are in Vienna and make their voices, violins, and accordions sing in this part of the world! You can find a foretaste here, and the whole live-polka-yodel-waltz-amusement in the evening!

Easter Sale at Indigo Express
If the Easter bunny brought you cash instead of sweets this year, you might consider hopping over to Indigo Express real quick. Which means that a variety of original vintage furniture pieces and Asia-inspired Shabby Chic accessories can be snatched for prices up to 50% lower than usual! Including: rustic-style benches, cool cupboards, side boards, chairs, lanterns. Since they were collected in India, they’re all recycled, upcycled, quite extraordinary and decorative!

Running Dinner
Fun idea for meeting new people! As of recently, “running dinners” are being organised in Vienna, today there’s one on the subject of “Bella Italia”. It works like this: several 2-person-teams (your best friend or sweetheart has to join in!) that don’t know each other cook 3 courses for the others, invite each other and thus meet new people. Each team cooks one course for the others (at their own expense) in their own apartment and, in exchange, gets treated the same way at two other private addresses. At the end of the evening, all Dinner Runners meet up in a bar to talk. Exciting!
Several private homes and 1 bar in Vienna. 5 April 18:00 to 23:30. Sign up! 12 €. Web

La Muse et la Mode
Now who’s being kissed by the muse here? Austrian fashion designer Karl Michael, who will show his newest creations during the Friday Nights at Palais Schönborn? Or Japanese ballerina and Zeitgeist-dancer Manaho Shimokawa, who connects fashion with dance in a stunning choreography? Or star violinist Yury Revich and other musicians, who provide a brilliant soundtrack with a mix of classical baroque sounds and electro fantasy sounds? In any case, CitySpotterGirl certainly won’t miss this unusual combination of fashion show and concert!

Special sale buttons
Now, a visit at Zweithand, the secondhand-bargain center in the 17th district, is always a good idea. You regularly come across some chic retro and vintage treasures, after all. Plus, the net proceeds benefit charity projects of Wiener Hilfswerk. But today, there’s a colourful special sale of buttons on top of that, tempting you to do some public-spirited fashion shopping. Maybe you’d like to pimp up your new spring cape with precious vintage pearlescent buttons or get a set of stylish eyecatcher-buttons for your next DIY-sewing project.

Ana Paula da Silva
In Brazil, she’s known by every toddler and every grandma: the exceptionally talented singer-songwriter, guitarist and multiple times Music Award winner Ana Paula da Silva. Something hardly anyone knows: the Brazilian spent two years of her life in Austria! Here, she performed with jazz stars like Karl Hodina and started her Europe tour together with Joe Zawinul and Syndicate band. Right now, she’s traveling the world solo with her new program “Canto da Cigarra” and touching-passionate songs. Tonight, she’s giving a onetime performance in Klosterneuburg!

Vintage furniture market
Today, there’s lots to browse and discover at Hotel Brillantengrund! The courtyard is turned into a small, fine vintage furniture market, where leading Viennese retro-designers like Bananas, Catrinette, Dekorative and Voldaandesign Holland have brought some of their favourite selected pieces. Bananas, for example, is presenting cool serving carts from the 50s, Catrinette brings school chairs from the 60s from an old school building. But there are also desk lamps, wall coat racks, tableware, vases and other deco articles that will brighten up your apartment in the future!

Brain wash at the launderette
Has the laundrette of the 5th district social housing complex Matteottihof been plunged into a science-fiction film somehow? Not exactly, but director and artist Thomas Jelinek is holding a public brain wash there! For three days, the audience will get the chance to explore various settings and equipment ranging from a brain scanner to eye-tracking glasses accentuated by an electronic live music set by composer Jorge Sánchez-Chiong. Your own self will be cleaned in small groups in a unique wash ;-) And totally en passant, you get the chance to deal with manipulation of media communication!

Cafe Nachbarin
It may be a beautifully green area – but it’s a bit of a yawning void when it comes to venues above Gersthofer Platzl. That’s why Magdalena Schönhofer and Sebastian Marberger want to become the new chit-chat & cake hangout of the neighbourhood. In the small sun-yellow café at the corner, they serve their own herbal tea mixtures (free tasting for the opening!), home-made pies and coffee. In good weather, you can even sit outside in the small front yard. There’s also an open book shelf for hungry book worms, plus, they also have a food-sharing fridge. Neat!

Visiting Viennese Ateliers
Discover something new: on the weekend, more than 40 artisan craft workers and designers open their shops and ateliers. This is cool since you can watch them work up close and look over their shoulders live! For instance, Suzy Löscher from Lilu Taschen shows how she creates her eye-catching models, Benoit Gervais how he builds violins, violas, and cellos and Franziska Neusser how she crochets her elegant glass pearl bangles. But getting active yourself is encouraged as well: like at Reinhard Winter’s stone sculpture “try it”, where you’re allowed to have fun with soapstone and marble.

Women, step forward! Today’s guided tour at the Jewish Museum in the course of their current exhibition “Comrade. Jew. We only wanted Paradise on Earth” is dedicated to six female revolutionaries, who made important contributions to the fight for equality of all people. With the exception of Rosa Luxemburg however, who fought for the rights of the working class, these women are unknown today. Lisa Markstein, Eva Priester, Gerty Schindel, Prive Friedjung and Malke Schorr were overshadowed by the male fighter for a new, better society – unjustly!

Cheese-cider festival
Making cheese and letting it ripen is a very lively process – and really a science in itself! For example, the different temperatures during the maturation process play an important role for the unfolding of the life in the milk. And the cultures that have developed live on in the cheese and influence it even during the ripening process. At today’s Ke:s-Mo:st-Fe:st, visitors have the chance to taste cheese of all ripening stages under the expert guidance of Anton Sutterlüty, and in addition, versatile cider from Mostothek at the museum is served.

Ydessa Hendeles
Entering Kunsthalle right now and with that the world of Canadian artist Ydessa Hendeles is not for the faint of heart. Because the spatial installations of life-size dolls, statues of saints, photographs, paintings, books of fairytales, and other bizarre artefacts really affects your psyche. Especially in the central room “From her wooden sleep”, where you’ll find yourself among hundreds of wooden figures in an atmosphere between courtroom, chamber of horrors, and crypt. Ydessa Hendeles raises questions: of expulsion, uprooting, and identity. So impressive!

Vienna’s Water
Berlin and the Spree, London and the Thames, or Vienna and the Danube – a city always grows and takes shape around its water(s). Tonight, you can learn from Verena Winiwarter from Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt how much Vienna’s cityscape has changed in the last decades in terms of structure and environment due to the waves from Danube and other waters. She has studied the city & the environment’s developments from Ottakring’s stream to Danube, from Wiener Neustädter Kanal to the Mühlbäche along the Vienna river. And she’s made some fascinating urban-rural discoveries!
